Peter Zeihan, author and geopolitical strategist, is back on the show with Jason Hartman to discuss inflation, the breakdown of supply chains and global manufacturing, the labor shortage, generational demographics, the Russia Ukraine conflict, and so much more!

“In his timely new book, The End of the World is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Globalization, author and geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan maps out
the next world: a world where countries or regions will have no choice but to make their own goods, grow their own food, secure their own energy, fight their own battles, and do it all with populations that are both shrinking and aging.

The list of countries that make it all work is smaller than you think. Which means everything about our interconnected world - from how we manufacture products, to how we grow food, to how we keep the lights on, to how we shuttle stuff about, to how we pay for it all - is about to change. A world ending. A world beginning. Zeihan brings readers along for an illuminating (and a bit terrifying) ride packed with foresight, wit, and his trademark irreverence.”

At the moment, the labor disconnect is the single largest issue behind our inflation numbers and the worker shortage will increase every year until 2030. The advanced worker cadre of baby boomers is moving into retirement and the need for government spending to keep these people alive will skyrocket.

The very core of globalization is that anyone can go anywhere to get anything. This will change as China is no longer a reliable manufacturing partner and many companies are on their way out. Also, when we talk about the breakdown of supply chains, we're entering into a world where raw commodity access is no longer guaranteed, so we can look forward to large portions of the world losing access to the inputs that are necessary to attempt a modern lifestyle. Take silicon for semiconductors for example; 95% of it comes from one mine in North Carolina. So it's one thing to control global food or global energy - it's another thing when you can control the only input that allows digitization to even theoretically happen.

The sourcing of raw materials is critical. Now that the world's top wheat exporter has invaded the world's number four wheat exporter, what short and long term consequences can we expect? Not to mention that Russia is also the world's largest exporter of fertilizer and the components necessary so people can make it. We're in the early stages of a multi year shortage in all things agricultural.

Is the World Economic Forum in Davos a serious discussion about climate change and injustice, or just a chance for billionaires to get together and do business? Find out as Jason Hartman interviews Peter S. Goodman, Global Economic Correspondent for The New York Times, as they discuss his new book, Davos Man: How the Billionaires Devoured the World.

The World Economic Forum institution was started by German economist Klaus Schwab back in the 70s, on the proposition that if you got businesses and governments together, you could solve a lot of problems. Schwab claims to be interested in public private partnerships and win-win solutions. But somewhere along the way, the WEF has become, under the guise of a nonprofit foundation, a highly lucrative enterprise. Schwab brings in heads of state from around the world to meet with billionaires, public intellectuals, a whole lot of journalists, the odd Hollywood celebrity, musicians etc. But according to Goodman, it’s a charade; they are there to do business.

The WEF 2022 recently took place last May. Peter profiles the “Davos Man” as someone who makes himself the solution where he is the problem: just allow us to do our deals, and have our conversations about how to solve the big problems of the day and we will take care of that and all of the benefits will just magically trickle down throughout society. Let’s not kid ourselves. That is something that has in reality happened zero times…

35:11 Is Trump the “Anti-Davos Man?”

37:59 China is a complex challenge for the global trading system

Jason Hartman invites Casey Michel, author and investigative journalist, to speak about his new book which uncovers how the US has created the greatest money laundering scheme in history.

South Dakota has pioneered an entire industry of what they call anonymous trusts. South Dakota has taken this to a magnitude we've never seen by creating perpetual anonymity for these trusts. The information of those in the trust will never be shared with governments, with other jurisdictions, tax authorities, investigators, which is why we've seen both Americans and non Americans flocking to South Dakota. $900 billion is the top line estimate in South Dakota, but it's still a question of how many total assets are actually there, who those assets are connected to and what those assets are actually doing after they pass through all the anonymity that the state of South Dakota freely offers.

Casey Michel’s book also talks about illicit foreign money purchasing steel mills, factories and manufacturing plants in places like Cleveland, Ohio, the Rust Belt and the Midwest. They're not revitalizing local communities and bringing jobs back, but rather using those assets to hold and hide funds, using them as part of a broader transnational money laundering scheme. And so what ends up happening is that not only do the jobs never come back, the folks who have the remaining jobs are just laid off, the factories begin falling apart and it’s clear they are never going to come back. These local communities in places such as West Virginia, Kentucky, Texas and Illinois are seeing their economic crown jewels go to complete rot because of this system of kleptocracy.

Towards the end of the broader Cold War period, one could see a sudden surge in the creation of financial secrecy pools and broader economic structuring that incentivized the outflow of illicit suspect wealth from post communist states. These states are linked directly to rising oligarchies and dictatorships that are smothering local populations, looting national treasuries, and making sure bridges, roads, hospitals and schools are never built. And then beyond that, there is no broader free market economy that actually develops in those countries.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Jason Hartman interviews Alfred W. McCoy, Harrington Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on his work investigating the changing nature of empires, the kind of world orders they create and projecting this knowledge into the future. McCoy’s latest book To Govern the Globe: World Orders and Catastrophic Change, analyzes the rise and fall of empires through their geopolitics.

Can the liberal international order that the United States created during its 70 years as the world’s great hegemon survive? Will the rise of China displace the US? China is using the Belt and Road Initiative to break our economic dominance over Eurasia and if that happens, then it is almost as if by natural law, power and profit will flow to Beijing and China will become the epicenter of the global economy. Global accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates that by 2030, China's economy will be 50% larger than the US economy.

Jason Hartman and Alfred McCoy also discuss the dollar as the world’s reserve currency, China’s presence in Africa and the ramifications of climate change producing very serious problems for world order.

Key Takeaways:

1:29 In 600 years of world history, there have been 90 empires, but only 3 world orders

2:43 All powerful empires have an expiration date

3:33 Will the Chinese regime displace the US? Even with their growing demographic problem?

5:38 What happened when China joined the World Trade Organization?

6:46 To be the global hegemon, you must dominate Eurasia

8:07 Estimates say that by 2030, China's economy will be 50% larger than the US economy

9:05 Nixon in China

10:29 Post Cold War US globalized economy

12:21 Securing a permanent lien on middle eastern oil after the 9/11 attacks

14:00 Renewable and nuclear energy

16:31 China as the world's global hegemon by 2030, will be the most adversely affected by climate change

20:03 Extending the retirement age

21:29 Evolution of the current world order

24:06 Lifting people out of poverty

26:13 China has had serious and sustained economic engagement with Africa for the past 45 years

31:36 Will the dollar retain reserve currency status?

34:16 Climate change refugees and the world order

36:35 Could the world collapse into global disorder?

39:23 Transforming our energy infrastructure into renewable energy

16:10 – There are certain things that the Koreans just won't let you bring into the country depending on the day.

Jason Hartman sits down and talks with Jeff DeGraff, professor for the University of Michigan's Ross Business school and an expert in innovation. He has a new book coming out called, “Making Stone Soup: How to Jumpstart Innovation Teams” and has helped grow world leading corporations such as American Airlines, General Electric, and Coca Cola by using his Competing Values Framework system.

Key Takeaways:

1:30 – There are a lot of challenges in innovation when it comes to a team setting, this is why Jeff wrote his newest book - Making Stone Soup.

4:30 – Innovation is created through conflicting ideas and through that, the development of new hybrid-ideas.

7:10 – Forget the 80/20 rule. Innovation uses the 20/80 rule.

11:40 – Patents are more incremental now than ever before. Is this because 'everything has already been invented'?

14:50 – Millennials have a radically different social view and this is why you're seeing a slight shift in the market and less patenting. A different type of innovation is being created.

18:40 – There are four things that make innovation happen. You need a high quality target, surround yourself with experts, take multiple shots or tries on your goal; fail often, fail fast, and learn; and the final step is to learn from your experiences.

25:00 – Never fix what doesn't work. Work on what does work.

26:40 – Before you start something, you have to stop something you're currently doing because we don't have the capability to do everything. Everything costs something.

28:00 – Remember as you're creating something, you will have to go through different versions. No one is perfect. Do version 1, get feedback, then work on version 2, and so forth.

25.30 – The alleged main aim of bitcoin is to have an economy free from the government, but in the event of any incidents occurring, the only way they could get out from it is with government assistance.

Key Takeaways

02.33 – Years ago, investing a lot into the stock market seemed more reliable, now it’s more a case of putting all your eggs in one basket. There are some who are firmer believers in investing in real estate and hard assets as well.

04.30 – Back in the 1970s, Doug Casey made a name for himself in his promotion of internationalization, to the point of having multiple passports, bank accounts and investments in multiple jurisdictions.

06.30 – With the US becoming steadily more militarized, it’s becoming more important to be sure of your own investments and situation within different jurisdictions.

08.00 – Internationalization also works as a sort of personal backup – various real estate investments can be unsuccessful and having a back-up in another jurisdiction can be a sensible business strategy. Similarly, at the very least, a second passport gives you another valid travel document.

09.40 – Paraguay remains one of the most popular destinations for US citizens looking to obtain a second passport. That said, with this sort of transaction, there are always fraud risks, so listeners should take particular care.

11.40 – When considering your options for alternative investments and managing your assets, Bobby Casey personally recommends asset-class diversification as well as geo-political diversification.

11.55 – Be wary of likely “investments” where you don’t receive any income – this is not an investment; this is a speculation. If you are going to actively invest money into speculations, work on a figure closer to 5% than to 50%.

13.25 – Trust companies can be used for a number of different purposes, because it’s basically the act of setting up a structure to manage your wealth. The most common usage is to assist beneficiaries, usually the trust-holder’s children, but they can also help with litigation risks because often the money is no longer seen to be in your ownership.

15.40 – Again, risks can be associated with the management of trusts if a case does come to court, and there’s a chance of being accused of contempt of court. As a settler, never name yourself as protector of the trust.

17.35 – The number one most important aspect is only doing business with people you trust.

18.40 – One of the positives of having your assets in farmland or property is that these are not easy to liquidate, and discrepancies will be noticed.

20.00 – The amount you get back and the time you wait until you get the money back depends on the projects you work on and invest in – ie. timber farms are a great way to compound your wealth, but it can be a lengthy process. With many timber farms, you’re splitting the profit over time with the management team working on the site.

22.50 – Even if you have the usual management, political or business risks, with investments and assets like timber farms or real estate, you do still have your stake in the property.

24.00 – Mango farms or other fruit farms can also be a fairly reliable investment due to the longevity of the tree’s production itself, so your investment is long-term.

25.20 – More information can be found at www.globalwealthprotection.com or by emailing Bobby Casey directly at bobby@globalwealthprotection.com

Within seven long years after college, William Lee switched careers three times, wiped his slate clean, and took massive pay cuts all in the pursuit of a lifestyle which at the time, was only a dream.

He had had three immediate goals:

1) be my own boss

2) work from home

3) be a stay at home dad (I'm still childless)

There was a fourth goal which he shared with others but did not believe in it at the time. That goal was to live in different countries weeks to months at a time.

In 2007, he launched an online ecommerce business that sold nutritional products. This was his fourth startup and this time, he had too much pride to fail again. Facing 10k in debt just 2 months into the launch, he secured a loan from my parents and had the fire on his rear end grow even hotter. That's when things clicked and he matured from delinquent wannabe entrepreneur to growing small business owner.

It's been several years since taking that first step with a one way ticket to Vancouver, BC. William spent time in many places around the US and abroad and completed a 14 month trip in Costa Rica. Today, he is heading to Bali, Indonesia and plans to continue his way around the world, sharing what he had learned and giving to others a different way to look at life.

Shannon Enete is an international resident from San Diego, currently residing in Costa Rica. Her first career of 10 years was spent serving San Diego & Kansas City as a paramedic. Shannon visited over 27 countries by the age of 30. Enete is the author of new release, Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica and Teeth Not Tears: Smiles Through the Rubble. She freelances for the Costa Rican Star, Jaco Journal, International Living, A.M. Costa Rica, Global Living Magazine, Pink Pangea, and the Costa Rican Sun. "Their outlook on life was so beautiful and pure, I had to share their story with the world," says Enete.

Standout information about Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica

- There are a lot of guide books that generally direct you towards life overseas, but few that break down exactly what you need to do to obtain residency, start a business, use the healthcare, move your pets, enroll your children in school, and so on for a particular country. Becoming an Expat Guidebook Series fills that nees. Each guidebook will be updated every year or two depending on popularity, plus we will post updates between editions at: www.becominganexpat.com

- These guidebooks are packed with expat experiences, stories, and tips to help merge the gap between how rules and regulations are written on paper and how they actually play out.

- Also included is which apps are best for expats, which electronics will facilitate easy international living, expansive school lists, handy tax forms, and more.

Relationship expert and best-selling author, Dr. John Gray, joins Jason Hartman to talk about research studies and Dr. Gray’s new work, “Boys to Men.” Dr. Gray talks about how his observations have been backed up by and further explained by brain studies, showing obvious differences between men and women in brain function and hormones that affect health and behavior.

He offers a deeper explanation of these differences based on scientific research showing how activities particular to each gender, diet, and an increased existence of xenoestrogens in our environment play a significant role in hormonal balance and imbalance. Dr. Gray discusses the proper use of supplements and the dangers of pharmaceuticals. This leads into his new work regarding healthy male development and his upcoming new book, Boys to Men, a look at how boys have been affected by today’s culture, showing a higher dropout rate than girls, lower comprehension, and higher instances of boredom and depression.

The high carbohydrate diet we consume plays a big role in this trend, and he cites inflammation in the brain as one factor in decreased comprehension. He describes activities, diet and supplements that can alleviate inflammation and stress and bring about optimal health in both men and women.

John Gray, Ph.D. is the best-selling relationship author of all time and the most trusted voice in relationships today. He is the author of 17 books, including The New York Times #1 Best-Selling Book of the last decade, MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS. John is a leading internationally recognized expert in the fields of communication and relationships. His unique focus is assisting men and women in understanding, respecting and appreciating their differences. John's advice can be easily used to improve relationships at home and in the workplace.

There is a saturation of travel search engines these days that will do everything from find a cheap flight to offering tips and advice on best hotels, restaurants and sights to visit.  So how does one stand out from the rest?  On this episode, Jason Hartman talks with one of Momondo’s partners, Martin Lumbye. Launched in 2006, there were fewer travel search engines, but today, the web is crowded with them. Momondo has very sophisticated search technology, but being based in Denmark posed a challenge to becoming a global brand.

Thanks to the media, they succeeded. As the market became more saturated, Momondo’s leaders came up with a unique, but user-friendly and contemporary approach for travelers to find the best flight comparisons and destinations around the world: a color-coded system to match a traveler’s emotions/mood for travel.  For instance, if traveling with children to a city, you would choose green for a list of family-friendly destinations. If you’re looking for something trendy and vibrant in a city, you would choose hot pink.

Martin Lumbye is a Partner of Momondo, which was launched in Denmark in September 2006. His role at Momondo encompasses: marketing, communications, business development and all commercial arrangements. Momondo has rapidly become one of Scandinavia’s most popular travel meta-search sites. Today it is an international site with a very compelling range of services which enables consumers to quickly search for and book a trip. Services include: flights, car rentals, hotels, travel guides, multi-destination booking and many high-speed rail routes.
