16:10 – There are certain things that the Koreans just won't let you bring into the country depending on the day.

Jason Hartman sits down and talks with Jeff DeGraff, professor for the University of Michigan's Ross Business school and an expert in innovation. He has a new book coming out called, “Making Stone Soup: How to Jumpstart Innovation Teams” and has helped grow world leading corporations such as American Airlines, General Electric, and Coca Cola by using his Competing Values Framework system.

Key Takeaways:

1:30 – There are a lot of challenges in innovation when it comes to a team setting, this is why Jeff wrote his newest book - Making Stone Soup.

4:30 – Innovation is created through conflicting ideas and through that, the development of new hybrid-ideas.

7:10 – Forget the 80/20 rule. Innovation uses the 20/80 rule.

11:40 – Patents are more incremental now than ever before. Is this because 'everything has already been invented'?

14:50 – Millennials have a radically different social view and this is why you're seeing a slight shift in the market and less patenting. A different type of innovation is being created.

18:40 – There are four things that make innovation happen. You need a high quality target, surround yourself with experts, take multiple shots or tries on your goal; fail often, fail fast, and learn; and the final step is to learn from your experiences.

25:00 – Never fix what doesn't work. Work on what does work.

26:40 – Before you start something, you have to stop something you're currently doing because we don't have the capability to do everything. Everything costs something.

28:00 – Remember as you're creating something, you will have to go through different versions. No one is perfect. Do version 1, get feedback, then work on version 2, and so forth.

Key Takeaways

02.33 – Years ago, investing a lot into the stock market seemed more reliable, now it’s more a case of putting all your eggs in one basket. There are some who are firmer believers in investing in real estate and hard assets as well.

04.30 – Back in the 1970s, Doug Casey made a name for himself in his promotion of internationalization, to the point of having multiple passports, bank accounts and investments in multiple jurisdictions.

06.30 – With the US becoming steadily more militarized, it’s becoming more important to be sure of your own investments and situation within different jurisdictions.

08.00 – Internationalization also works as a sort of personal backup – various real estate investments can be unsuccessful and having a back-up in another jurisdiction can be a sensible business strategy. Similarly, at the very least, a second passport gives you another valid travel document.

09.40 – Paraguay remains one of the most popular destinations for US citizens looking to obtain a second passport. That said, with this sort of transaction, there are always fraud risks, so listeners should take particular care.

11.40 – When considering your options for alternative investments and managing your assets, Bobby Casey personally recommends asset-class diversification as well as geo-political diversification.

11.55 – Be wary of likely “investments” where you don’t receive any income – this is not an investment; this is a speculation. If you are going to actively invest money into speculations, work on a figure closer to 5% than to 50%.

13.25 – Trust companies can be used for a number of different purposes, because it’s basically the act of setting up a structure to manage your wealth. The most common usage is to assist beneficiaries, usually the trust-holder’s children, but they can also help with litigation risks because often the money is no longer seen to be in your ownership.

15.40 – Again, risks can be associated with the management of trusts if a case does come to court, and there’s a chance of being accused of contempt of court. As a settler, never name yourself as protector of the trust.

17.35 – The number one most important aspect is only doing business with people you trust.

18.40 – One of the positives of having your assets in farmland or property is that these are not easy to liquidate, and discrepancies will be noticed.

20.00 – The amount you get back and the time you wait until you get the money back depends on the projects you work on and invest in – ie. timber farms are a great way to compound your wealth, but it can be a lengthy process. With many timber farms, you’re splitting the profit over time with the management team working on the site.

22.50 – Even if you have the usual management, political or business risks, with investments and assets like timber farms or real estate, you do still have your stake in the property.

24.00 – Mango farms or other fruit farms can also be a fairly reliable investment due to the longevity of the tree’s production itself, so your investment is long-term.

25.20 – More information can be found at www.globalwealthprotection.com or by emailing Bobby Casey directly at bobby@globalwealthprotection.com

Within seven long years after college, William Lee switched careers three times, wiped his slate clean, and took massive pay cuts all in the pursuit of a lifestyle which at the time, was only a dream.

He had had three immediate goals:

1) be my own boss

2) work from home

3) be a stay at home dad (I'm still childless)

There was a fourth goal which he shared with others but did not believe in it at the time. That goal was to live in different countries weeks to months at a time.

In 2007, he launched an online ecommerce business that sold nutritional products. This was his fourth startup and this time, he had too much pride to fail again. Facing 10k in debt just 2 months into the launch, he secured a loan from my parents and had the fire on his rear end grow even hotter. That's when things clicked and he matured from delinquent wannabe entrepreneur to growing small business owner.

It's been several years since taking that first step with a one way ticket to Vancouver, BC. William spent time in many places around the US and abroad and completed a 14 month trip in Costa Rica. Today, he is heading to Bali, Indonesia and plans to continue his way around the world, sharing what he had learned and giving to others a different way to look at life.

Shannon Enete is an international resident from San Diego, currently residing in Costa Rica. Her first career of 10 years was spent serving San Diego & Kansas City as a paramedic. Shannon visited over 27 countries by the age of 30. Enete is the author of new release, Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica and Teeth Not Tears: Smiles Through the Rubble. She freelances for the Costa Rican Star, Jaco Journal, International Living, A.M. Costa Rica, Global Living Magazine, Pink Pangea, and the Costa Rican Sun. She is a columnist for Expat Focus and Voz de Guanacaste. In addition to writing, Shannon owns Enete Enterprises, LLC a video and print publication company that specializes in travel guidebooks and the creation of marketing videos for tourism, hospitality, and real estate sectors.

Her first book was Teeth Not Tears: Smiles Through the Rubble, a biographical narrative that told the stories of two Haitian brothers, whom she met while volunteering in Haiti after the earthquake. "Their outlook on life was so beautiful and pure, I had to share their story with the world," says Enete.

Standout information about Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica

- There are a lot of guide books that generally direct you towards life overseas, but few that break down exactly what you need to do to obtain residency, start a business, use the healthcare, move your pets, enroll your children in school, and so on for a particular country. Becoming an Expat Guidebook Series fills that nees. Each guidebook will be updated every year or two depending on popularity, plus we will post updates between editions at: www.becominganexpat.com

- These guidebooks are packed with expat experiences, stories, and tips to help merge the gap between how rules and regulations are written on paper and how they actually play out.

- Also included is which apps are best for expats, which electronics will facilitate easy international living, expansive school lists, handy tax forms, and more.
