Key Takeaways:

1:30 – There are a lot of challenges in innovation when it comes to a team setting, this is why Jeff wrote his newest book - Making Stone Soup.

26:40 – Before you start something, you have to stop something you're currently doing because we don't have the capability to do everything. Everything costs something.

28:00 – Remember as you're creating something, you will have to go through different versions. No one is perfect. Do version 1, get feedback, then work on version 2, and so forth.

Key Takeaways

05.00 – A lot of the developments and changes happening to Dubai are to provide the desired lifestyle for the growing expatriate community there.

08.00 – Each of the Emirates in the UAE has different societal structures which lead to a different overall feeling of the country.

15.00 – Tourism remains one of the largest and most profitable industries in the Middle East.

17.20 – Transportation and particularly transportation of goods or consumer items is one of the biggest draws in oil reserves.

18.30 – In some ways, bit-coin seems attractive as an alternative currency, but the FBI and the IRS’s insistence that it is taxable property definitely alters some people’s view of it.

22.00 – The volatility of bitcoin as a prospective currency makes it particularly unattractive to merchants.

25.30 – The alleged main aim of bitcoin is to have an economy free from the government, but in the event of any incidents occurring, the only way they could get out from it is with government assistance.

They also talk about society’s general perception of certain countries and compare it with their own thoughts.

Key Takeaways

4.00 – There are often two options for making money with overseas real estate: rent it out or buy and sell.

6.00 – Decide on how your strategy is going to work and talk to people who can advise you. When advertising your property online, make the best use of websites such as: www.airbnb.com, www.vrbo.com, www.homeaway.co.uk,  www.flipkey.com, www.roomarama.co.uk.

18.00 – Websites such as www.zillow.com and www.realtor.com are great for helping you ascertain what a property is worth.

20.50 – One of the best strategies if you’re on the ground is to be known among the agents and to work with them.

23.40 – Getting loans or money from these overseas banks is possible and there are options available, but it’s not an easy process.

25.50 – Buying too many apartments and being tied to too many contracts is one of the biggest setbacks to those going into real estate business.

31.30 – As difficult as it can be to obtain a second citizenship, a lot of people are looking into it, just in case.

36.40 – Travellers form their own opinions about the countries they visit; Taylor White sees Brazil as overrated.

38.00 – As a foreigner buying real estate overseas, one of your biggest difficulties might be setting up a bank account. Brazil, for example, does not allow this.

Key Takeaways

10.00 – By carefully planning your trips and your income, you can make a huge saving on your living expenses.

10.20 – When you’re travelling and you’re short of money, you tend to hit a survivalist mentality where you find a way to fix your situation.

10.58 – If your travels become known through blogs or other platforms, there are ways to get hotels and even flights for free.

12.00 – One of the best travel hacking tips is having a minimum spend deal with a credit card company, and getting travel included in the package.

13.40 – Sometimes we have to go against psychological impulses and decide whether hacking or getting a quick deal gives the greatest overall return.

14.50 – Travelling and following your passion gives you the opportunity to create your own job.

Key Takeaways

02.33 – Years ago, investing a lot into the stock market seemed more reliable, now it’s more a case of putting all your eggs in one basket. There are some who are firmer believers in investing in real estate and hard assets as well.

04.30 – Back in the 1970s, Doug Casey made a name for himself in his promotion of internationalization, to the point of having multiple passports, bank accounts and investments in multiple jurisdictions.

06.30 – With the US becoming steadily more militarized, it’s becoming more important to be sure of your own investments and situation within different jurisdictions.

08.00 – Internationalization also works as a sort of personal backup – various real estate investments can be unsuccessful and having a back-up in another jurisdiction can be a sensible business strategy. Similarly, at the very least, a second passport gives you another valid travel document.

09.40 – Paraguay remains one of the most popular destinations for US citizens looking to obtain a second passport. That said, with this sort of transaction, there are always fraud risks, so listeners should take particular care.

11.40 – When considering your options for alternative investments and managing your assets, Bobby Casey personally recommends asset-class diversification as well as geo-political diversification.

11.55 – Be wary of likely “investments” where you don’t receive any income – this is not an investment; this is a speculation. If you are going to actively invest money into speculations, work on a figure closer to 5% than to 50%.

13.25 – Trust companies can be used for a number of different purposes, because it’s basically the act of setting up a structure to manage your wealth. The most common usage is to assist beneficiaries, usually the trust-holder’s children, but they can also help with litigation risks because often the money is no longer seen to be in your ownership.

15.40 – Again, risks can be associated with the management of trusts if a case does come to court, and there’s a chance of being accused of contempt of court. As a settler, never name yourself as protector of the trust.

17.35 – The number one most important aspect is only doing business with people you trust.

18.40 – One of the positives of having your assets in farmland or property is that these are not easy to liquidate, and discrepancies will be noticed.

20.00 – The amount you get back and the time you wait until you get the money back depends on the projects you work on and invest in – ie. timber farms are a great way to compound your wealth, but it can be a lengthy process. With many timber farms, you’re splitting the profit over time with the management team working on the site.

22.50 – Even if you have the usual management, political or business risks, with investments and assets like timber farms or real estate, you do still have your stake in the property.

24.00 – Mango farms or other fruit farms can also be a fairly reliable investment due to the longevity of the tree’s production itself, so your investment is long-term.

25.20 – More information can be found at www.globalwealthprotection.com or by emailing Bobby Casey directly at bobby@globalwealthprotection.com

Within seven long years after college, William Lee switched careers three times, wiped his slate clean, and took massive pay cuts all in the pursuit of a lifestyle which at the time, was only a dream.

He had had three immediate goals:

1) be my own boss

2) work from home

3) be a stay at home dad (I'm still childless)

There was a fourth goal which he shared with others but did not believe in it at the time. That goal was to live in different countries weeks to months at a time.

In 2007, he launched an online ecommerce business that sold nutritional products. This was his fourth startup and this time, he had too much pride to fail again. Facing 10k in debt just 2 months into the launch, he secured a loan from my parents and had the fire on his rear end grow even hotter. That's when things clicked and he matured from delinquent wannabe entrepreneur to growing small business owner.

It's been several years since taking that first step with a one way ticket to Vancouver, BC. William spent time in many places around the US and abroad and completed a 14 month trip in Costa Rica. Today, he is heading to Bali, Indonesia and plans to continue his way around the world, sharing what he had learned and giving to others a different way to look at life.

Shannon Enete is an international resident from San Diego, currently residing in Costa Rica. Her first career of 10 years was spent serving San Diego & Kansas City as a paramedic. Shannon visited over 27 countries by the age of 30. Enete is the author of new release, Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica and Teeth Not Tears: Smiles Through the Rubble. She freelances for the Costa Rican Star, Jaco Journal, International Living, A.M. Costa Rica, Global Living Magazine, Pink Pangea, and the Costa Rican Sun. She is a columnist for Expat Focus and Voz de Guanacaste. In addition to writing, Shannon owns Enete Enterprises, LLC a video and print publication company that specializes in travel guidebooks and the creation of marketing videos for tourism, hospitality, and real estate sectors.

Her first book was Teeth Not Tears: Smiles Through the Rubble, a biographical narrative that told the stories of two Haitian brothers, whom she met while volunteering in Haiti after the earthquake. "Their outlook on life was so beautiful and pure, I had to share their story with the world," says Enete.

Standout information about Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica

- There are a lot of guide books that generally direct you towards life overseas, but few that break down exactly what you need to do to obtain residency, start a business, use the healthcare, move your pets, enroll your children in school, and so on for a particular country. Becoming an Expat Guidebook Series fills that nees. Each guidebook will be updated every year or two depending on popularity, plus we will post updates between editions at: www.becominganexpat.com

- These guidebooks are packed with expat experiences, stories, and tips to help merge the gap between how rules and regulations are written on paper and how they actually play out.

- Also included is which apps are best for expats, which electronics will facilitate easy international living, expansive school lists, handy tax forms, and more.

He offers a deeper explanation of these differences based on scientific research showing how activities particular to each gender, diet, and an increased existence of xenoestrogens in our environment play a significant role in hormonal balance and imbalance. Dr. Gray discusses the proper use of supplements and the dangers of pharmaceuticals. This leads into his new work regarding healthy male development and his upcoming new book, Boys to Men, a look at how boys have been affected by today’s culture, showing a higher dropout rate than girls, lower comprehension, and higher instances of boredom and depression.

The high carbohydrate diet we consume plays a big role in this trend, and he cites inflammation in the brain as one factor in decreased comprehension. He describes activities, diet and supplements that can alleviate inflammation and stress and bring about optimal health in both men and women.

There is a saturation of travel search engines these days that will do everything from find a cheap flight to offering tips and advice on best hotels, restaurants and sights to visit.  So how does one stand out from the rest?  On this episode, Jason Hartman talks with one of Momondo’s partners, Martin Lumbye. Launched in 2006, there were fewer travel search engines, but today, the web is crowded with them. Momondo has very sophisticated search technology, but being based in Denmark posed a challenge to becoming a global brand.

Thanks to the media, they succeeded. As the market became more saturated, Momondo’s leaders came up with a unique, but user-friendly and contemporary approach for travelers to find the best flight comparisons and destinations around the world: a color-coded system to match a traveler’s emotions/mood for travel.  For instance, if traveling with children to a city, you would choose green for a list of family-friendly destinations. If you’re looking for something trendy and vibrant in a city, you would choose hot pink.

Martin Lumbye is a Partner of Momondo, which was launched in Denmark in September 2006. His role at Momondo encompasses: marketing, communications, business development and all commercial arrangements. Momondo has rapidly become one of Scandinavia’s most popular travel meta-search sites. Today it is an international site with a very compelling range of services which enables consumers to quickly search for and book a trip. Services include: flights, car rentals, hotels, travel guides, multi-destination booking and many high-speed rail routes.

Kevin Wessell is the president of The Hope for Congo Foundation, which is dedicated to the belief that education is the best way to break the cycle of poverty to give children around the world hope for a brighter future. He believes that every child should have the opportunity to have an education. Kevin teaches seminars in the US and Canada on subjects ranging from asset protection to real estate investing, primarily educating attorneys. With the lopsided lawsuit count in the United States compared to other countries of the world, it just makes sense for a US person to erect and maintain a legal fortress to ward off such an attack. A discussion about how the international travel is being adversely impacted by the global threat of terrorism. Robert feels the terrorism threat is very real, describing it as an easy way to have your way when you can’t have your way democratically. Robert advises people to travel light because of the long security lines in airports around the world. International terrorism plays a part in Robert’s new novel, which, in essence, describes how easily things can get out of hand and how complex the terrorist factions are around the globe.

Jason and Robert also talk about TSA issues. Robert feels there will be continued body searches and profiling, but that travel will become easier and terrorism less of a threat over time. In conclusion, Robert and Jason discuss Cuba, Burma and North Korea, contrasting the good and evil in some of the most beautiful places. Robert hopes that through books like his people will continue to be curious and seek the beautiful and interesting places in the world.

Born in Hungary, Robert Landori (whose full name is Robert Landori-Hoffmann) was, for most of his professional life, a senior public accountant, mergers and acquisitions specialist, and a trustee in bankruptcy in the Cayman Islands. But behind the facade of the quiet man of numbers lay a life of intrigue and mystery. He traveled widely throughout South America and the Caribbean, where he came into contact with international financiers, notorious con-men, well-known artists, famous entertainers and members of several countries’ intelligence communities.

Jason Hartman is joined by Larry Grossman, Managing Director of Sovereign International Pension Services, for a lesson on offshore IRAs and why anyone would want to diversify their assets outside of their own country, particularly the United States. Larry shares the many reasons for this, including concern people have with the direction of our country’s economic future.

He states that IRAs are the most common to take offshore and are least likely to raise red flags with the IRS. Larry defines offshore plans as actually having the assets, the investments and the custody of the assets outside of the United States. He also defines “Custodian,” “custody,” “administrator,” and many other technical terms associated with IRAs and pension plans.

Larry attempts to untangle the complicated web that is often the case with IRAs and pension plans, and talks about options people have for moving their retirement funds offshore, including some of the most popular places that assets are moved to throughout the world. Some of the options are quite interesting, including reforestation projects. Of course, real estate is a leading offshore investment.

Join Jason Hartman as he interviews Investment Director and Editor of The Sovereign Individual, Jeff Opdyke. While the middle class is shrinking in the United States, Jeff shares his global observations of a new emerging middle class in other previously oppressed countries, such as Asia and Africa, and how online international trading is becoming so much easier to do.

Jeff and Jason talk about the various pockets in different countries that are becoming more attractive to foreign investors, the ease or difficulty of investing in real estate in those areas, and how rates of return compare with the United States. Despite the economic condition of the United States, investing here is still the easiest and most affordable, offering higher rates of return on investment. Join Jason as he interviews Billy and Akaisha Kaderli about their powerful, practical, and substantive book, The Adventurer’s Guide to Early Retirement. Billy and Akaisha talk about why they retired at the age of 38 and discuss how others can do the same.

Billy was a trained and certified French chef, having trained in The Celestial and La Masisonette restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Billy and Akaisha met and married in Santa Cruz, California, 33 years ago. They spent six months traveling Europe, pursuing Michelin Guide restaurants with the intention of buying a restaurant and incorporating the food, wine, and research they had gathered. In late 1979, they purchased Luther’s, a 43-seat restaurant in Santa Cruz, which they owned and operated for ten years. Dean Witter took a keen interest in Billy and recruited him for their brokerage firm, where Billy eventually became Vice President of investments and branch manager of the Aptos office.

In 1989, they assessed their lives, their dreams, and their bank balance. They decided to make some bold choices and get on track to becoming early retirees. In January of 1991, at the age of 38, they retired and moved to Nevis, West Indies. From there, their perpetual gypsy lifestyle began, traveling through the West Indies, Venezuela, US, Canada, Mexico, and many nations in Asia. In 2005, they wrote the book, The Adventurer’s Guide to Early Retirement, A Common Sense Approach, which sold in 40 countries and is now in its 3rd edition.

Jason Hartman talks with Robert Landori about money laundering – the world‘s third largest business. It is so prevalent that the world‘s various authorities fighting this criminal activity hesitate to name a total figure. They only offer tentative estimates. Depending on whom you ask the figure ranges between US $600 Billion and $1.5 Trillion worldwide per year.

According to the International Monetary Fund, this represents between two and five per cent of the world‘s gross domestic product. The lower figure is equivalent to the value of the total output of an economy the size of Spain‘s.

This massive sum of illegal money usually finds a home in geographical areas that have lax control over their financial institutions (off-shore tax havens) where it is invested principally in ‘passive’ i.e. non-tangible-asset producing, ventures. This has a very serious impact on international economic development. Money laundering can only flourish where some sort of banking system exists that is willing to cooperate with money launderers. Because banking for money launderers can be extremely profitable many bankers cannot resist the temptation to participate.

Jason Hartman talks with Franz Wisner, a reformed cubicle worker and the author of Honeymoon With My Brother, the true story of how Franz was left at the altar, then decided to take a two-year, 53-country honeymoon with his younger brother, Kurt. The best-selling memoir is currently being made into a movie by Sony Pictures. In addition, Franz has penned numerous articles and opinion pieces for The San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Redbook Magazine, and Coast Magazine, among others. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Tracy Middendorf Wisner, and their children/future backpackers, Calvin and Oscar.

In 1999, he was dumped at the altar, just days before his scheduled wedding. The guests were en-route, the food and wine were on location, and the whole party was pre-paid. So he chose to have a weekend wedding bash anyway... just without a bride. He then decided to go on the planned two-week honeymoon to Costa Rica, substituting his brother Kurt for the Runaway Bride. They had such a good time exploring the country and reconnecting as siblings that they opted to extend the festivities for two years and fifty-three countries in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.

Throughout the "honeymoon," he penned a series of emails to family and friends about the quirks and oddities of travel. Until then he'd written for others (PR clients or politicians) but never for himself. Some of the essays made their way into newspapers and magazines thanks to a few encouraging friends in the media.  If you're interested in becoming a travel writer, this is your show!
