Within seven long years after college, William Lee switched careers three times, wiped his slate clean, and took massive pay cuts all in the pursuit of a lifestyle which at the time, was only a dream.

He had had three immediate goals:

1) be my own boss

2) work from home

3) be a stay at home dad (I'm still childless)

There was a fourth goal which he shared with others but did not believe in it at the time. That goal was to live in different countries weeks to months at a time.

In 2007, he launched an online ecommerce business that sold nutritional products. This was his fourth startup and this time, he had too much pride to fail again. Facing 10k in debt just 2 months into the launch, he secured a loan from my parents and had the fire on his rear end grow even hotter. That's when things clicked and he matured from delinquent wannabe entrepreneur to growing small business owner.

It's been several years since taking that first step with a one way ticket to Vancouver, BC. William spent time in many places around the US and abroad and completed a 14 month trip in Costa Rica. Today, he is heading to Bali, Indonesia and plans to continue his way around the world, sharing what he had learned and giving to others a different way to look at life.

Norman Viss and Carol Van Dyken are the founders of the Expat Everyday Support Center, which helps expats connect to their worlds.

Viss tells us the stories about how he coped as a young man working in isolated villages in the Nigerian savannah. He and Van Dyken then discuss what it has been like to live far from family, culture, traditions and lifestyle and the implications international living has on marriage and children.

Norman Viss holds B.A. and Master’s degrees, with majors in cross-cultural and urban studies and theology. He has many years of broad international experience working with people from a wide variety of cultures, including a 10 year span of living in Nigeria, West Africa, and 22 years in the Netherlands. Currently he lives in the Philadelphia, USA. In 2009 he completed the Certified Professional Coach Program at the International Coach Academy and is accredited by the International Coach Federation as Associate Certified Coach (ACC).

With a background in Human Resources (B.A. Human Resources and Business), Carol Van Dyken currently works on the development team of an international non-profit organization and has been trained and led seminars on interpersonal relationships through IT Partners. Things I like to think about:
